What is a Certificate Provider?
When you make an LPA, it is important that you understand what you are signing. You must also understand the legal effects of the document. The role of the certificate provider is to make sure that you understand this. Your certificate provider will also confirm that you are not under any pressure or force to sign the LPA. They will ensure that you are making the LPA of your own free will.
The certificate provider will ideally discuss the LPA with you in private and check that there are no reasons for concern. They will then sign the document to confirm these points. If you wish, you can sign the LPA at the same time as your certificate provider. A certificate provider can also act as your witness when you sign your LPA.
Your certificate provider will either be someone who knows you well, and who you have known for at least two years, or someone with relevant professional skills, such as a medical professional or legal professional. For more information on who can choose for this role, see: Choosing a certificate provider
